CHINA’S STADIUM COMMITMENT

Quoting the Island Sun newspaper – 24 October 2019

“The main stadium for the 2023 Pacific Games in Honiara will be a gift from the Chinese People to the people of Solomon Islands.

“Deputy Chief of Mission to the Chinese Embassy in Port Moresby, Yao Ming, who is in Honiara with four other Chinese officials, uttered the comments yesterday during the SINO-Solomon Islands Media Awareness.

“Yesterday journalists from various media outlets in Honiara attended a half day workshop on the SINO-Solomon Islands Media Awareness that was organized by the Office of the Prime Minister and Cabinet.

“Responding to questions regarding funding for the national stadium, Mr Ming said China is committed to implement their commitments for the stadium as the country prepares to host the 2023 Pacific Games.

“He said while there are concerns regarding China funding the stadium and the so called debt trap, he reassured that the stadium will be a state gift from China to the Solomon Islands.

“We are committed to help you successfully host a high quality 2023 Pacific Games,” he said.

“We will take into your country’s specific circumstances but we have reached an agreement with your government. We will sponsor the construction of the stadium.”
