GINGER AS AN EXPORT CROP FOR THE SOLOMON ISLANDS?

GINGER AS AN EXPORT CROP FOR THE SOLOMON ISLANDS?

Posted by : Posted on : 10-Sep-2019

The global market for ginger is expected to reach 3.3 million tons by 2024.

The global market for ginger is surging and provides an ideal opportunity for the Solomon Islands to export locally grown ginger to international markets.

Ginger is known to grow particularly well in the Solomon Islands and some three years ago the then Solomon Islands Government was eying exporting many containers per month of ginger to Canada.

At that time I recall Prime Minister Sogavare having said there was a huge market for ginger in Canada and they (Canada) wanted 10 containers every month. He added that 200 women in all the constituencies could plant ginger and 10 containers every month could be sustained.

I am not aware whether the idea of exporting ginger went according to plan.

Given the current market demand for ginger and knowing it represents a popular spice commanding good prices, is it not opportune to think afresh of the 10 container concept outlined some three years ago?

Yours sincerely
