SOLOMON Islands could miss out on the opportunity to host the University of the South Pacific’s School of Public Health, largely because the government has shown little interest in advancing the multi-million dollar project.

“It was agreed that the School, currently based in Suva, should be relocated to the USP, Solomon Islands Campus to be funded by a grant from the Asian Development Bank (ADB).

“Since then the USP has appointed Professor Prem Misir to oversee the project. Prof Misir arrived in Honiara last October and has since had consultations with the Government, including the then Minister of Health and Medical Services, Dr Tautai Agikimua Kaitu’u.

“A public tender was also called, but it was withdrawn on grounds of alleged vested interests. It is not clear when a new tender would be called.

“Prof Misir confirmed to Island Sun last week that time was running out for the project. Under the arrangement, the School of Public Health is supposed to be up and running by mid next year.”
