NORWAY'S EXPRESSED INTEREST IN HELPING THE SOLOMON ISLANDS WITH RENEWABLE ENERGY NEEDS

Norway’s expressed interest in assisting the Solomon Islands in areas of renewable energy, fisheries and climate change.

Norway recently announced its intention to double its contribution to the Green Climate Fund as proof of its further efforts in aiding developing countries meet climate change challenges by providing green energy resources.

I recall back in back in September last year, the then Solomon Islands Prime Minister, the Hon. Rick Hou held talks in Nauru with a delegation from Norway on possible help to the Solomon Islands with providing green energy.

The delegation’s leader, Cabinet Minister, Nikolai Astrup, said Norway was keen in assisting in the areas of renewable energy, fisheries, and climate change through multi-lateral means and signaled Norway’s interest in sharing its experience with Solomon Islands to address issues regarding ocean resources, over fishing and plastic pollution in the oceans.

As it is now 12 months on since that assurance by Norway to help provide green energy support to the Solomon Islands, perhaps it could be clarified just what assistance has been received or whether there are still plans in the pipeline for renewable energy, fisheries and climate change adaptation measures.

Yours sincerely
