SI: A PLEA FOR NATIONAL UNITY

SI: A PLEA FOR NATIONAL UNITY

A plea to overcome differences of opinion and seek to promote national unity of purpose.

“That men should brothers be, make nations see.
Our Solomon Islands, Our Solomon Islands.” {Lyrics from Solomon Islands National Anthem).

I perceive there has been some degree of opposition voiced in recent days over the DCGA’s decision to officially recognise China and cut the long standing diplomatic ties with Taiwan.

In a democracy and in a country where free speech is still a right of all, commentary made about the switch over in diplomatic ties is to be accepted, especially when the relationship with Taiwan has lasted for so long and perceived by many as having been beneficial.

As an ‘outsider’ looking on I would very much hope the new relationship with China will bring about the much needed development and infrastructure the SIG has predicted, and China will fully accept the sovereignty of the Solomon Islands and abide by all the fundamental ‘Rights Principles’ enshrined in the Solomon Islands Constitution.

National unity is essential and I believe all must work together to ensure that the Solomon Islands continues to promote democracy, promote human rights, eliminate corruption, promote human rights, accelerate gender equality, promote sustainable economic development, create jobs, increase trade and investment, enhance education and health services and be seen as a responsible regional security partner.

The Solomon Islands remains a relatively poor country by economic standards and a country in the Pacific having a strategic geo-political strategic importance; factors which allows donor to help improve the lives of the people while creating strong relationships with aid partners, including security alliances.

In a few words, the Solomon Islands helps to protect regional power interests.

In the past week alone, foreign aid assistance, and offers of likely aid to the Solomon Islands, has been evident from India, Morocco, Dubai, the United States and the Green Climate Fund.

Yours sincerely
