Solomon Islands: Encouraging and supporting youth employment in the agricultural sector.

Would readers agree that youth unemployment is one of the socioeconomic policy challenges facing the Solomon Islands Government’s economic growth and development today? Unless this problem is amicably addressed, it will hinder the country’s ambition to reduce poverty and attain a middle income status.

I feel sure most will agree but many might be surprised to know that, practically word for word, the opening paragraph was taken from the ‘National Strategy For Youth Employment in Agriculture’issued in 2017 by the Government of Uganda.

Since the speech at the start of the year by His Excellency the Governor-General, Sir David Vunagi, GCMG, in which he raised concerns for the informal sector and unemployment in the rural area, leading to urban drift and lost opportunities in the agricultural sector, I have sought to find any government initiated youth schemes with the potential of encouraging youths to seek and find fulfillment by working in rural-based agricultural endeavours.

The Uganda model laid out in the document I have mentioned is very comprehensive and I believe comes close to what I was looking for and would be well worth downloading and being considered.

I should just add that the document was formalised with the technical assistance of the FAO.

Yours sincerely
