The Tukutaunga Rural Health Clinic, RHC, Tikopia in Temotu Province received medical supplies for the second quarter 2021 last week.

The medical supplies were transported via a RSIPF Patrol Boat and delivered when Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare visited Tikopia Island last Wednesday. .

The medical supplies had been delayed because of transport difficulties facing the province especially Tikopia, Anuta and Vanikoro Islands.

The medical drugs received will last for the remaining two quarters of this year.

Meanwhile the one and only serving Registered Nurse working at Tukutaunga RHC Ms. Monica Fonotusi said it becomes a real problem especially when the medical drugs run out.

When we ran out of medical drugs, we live on faith through our prayers by prayer groups on the Island and waited patiently for drugs to arrive before treating a patient,” Ms. Fonotusi expressed.

Ms Fonotusi said transport difficulty were the main challenge faced by the Tikopians.

Ms.Fonotusi is grateful for the delivery of the medical supplies and thanked the Provincial and National Governments for the effort in supporting the medical services for the people on the island.

Comment.

Due to its isolated location I wonder whether medical supplies could be delivered by using UAV technology such as drones to deliver medical supplies.

Lack of access and connectivity, can make delivering medical cargo and supplies a very difficult task, as exemplified in the case of Tikopia.

The use of a drones could provide a significant opportunity as a potential solution to Tikopia’s issues, and could provide an exceptional level of service if adopted.

Yours sincerely
