Will the construction of two new health centres in Guadacanal soon herald the construction of others throughout the SI?

Yesterday, I wrote saying how two rural health centres at recently been constructed and brought into services for the communities at Aola and Avuavu in Guadalcanal Province.

In that letter I reported the comments of Dr. Simon Burggraaf, the WHO Project Manager in the Solomon who earlier had said, “WHO is very thankful for Kramer Ausenco’s dedication and hard work on the two Area Health Centre Projects, which represented a piloting of the new Ministry of Health and Medical Services Role Delineation Policy standards for health centre services and designs.”

Dr. Burggraaf also said the WHO was glad to have had the support from KOICA and the Korean Government, who helped fund the work (for the two completed health centres).

I am left wondering whether there are any other health centres planned for early construction with support from KOICA in Guadalcanal and in other provinces throughout the Solomon Islands, and perhaps Dr. Burggraaf would care to comment,

The physical health network in the Solomon Islands is made up of a National Referral Hospital (NRH), provincial hospitals, area health centres, rural health clinics and nurse aide posts. However, the area health centres and rural health clinics are in urgent need for upgrade, repair or renovation and the NRH has become burdened by the increase in NCD cases and bed shortages

Pressure would be taken off the NRH if some of the less serious medical needs in the communities could be dealt with qualified personnel in rural health centres where patients could have easy access without having to travel long distances to get medical attention.

The Korea International Cooperation Agency KOICA) was established in 1991 by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of South Korea as a governmental organization for Official Development Assistance (ODA) to enhance the effectiveness of South Korea's grant aid programs for developing countries by implementing the government's grant aid and technical cooperation programs.

I wasn’t fully aware of KOICA’s aid assistance to the Solomon Islands until learning of the funding for the two health centres in Guadalcanal but, like Dr. Burggraaf, am very appreciative of the agencies assistance and that of the Korean Government.

In separate news, the Solomon Islands government is to build a new general hospital on Tulagi and the Japanese Government has committed to some re-building and re-furbishing at the Kilu’ufi hospital.

Yours sincerely
