Marehu Youth Awareness Programme

The young members of the Solomon Islands Youth Strive Investors for Liberty Association (SIYSIFLA) based in Ward 24 on Malaita Island are intending to hold an awareness programme in the Ward from 6 to 9 January 2019 with the broad aims of promoting and developing community youth initiatives.

The Association wasstarted in 2010 as a result of young people having a common vision and mission to help highlight all youth issues affecting women, youths, children and families living in Ward 24 Mareho and throughout the country.

A primary aim of the Association is aimed in making sure that youth groups in the rural areas have basic information about all matters that affect youths, as stakeholders in the country, and that they can acquire the necessary information to learn about opportunities affecting young people and be given the opportunity of having their voices heard in decision making at all levels.

It is very much hoped the recent spell of severe weather that has caused much structural property damage in the Solomon Islands, particularly in Malaita, will not prevent the important youth youth awareness programme from going ahead as planned.

During the programme it is envisaged the agenda will cover such topics as:

 Community Youth Leadership.

 Youth Teamwork.

 Conflict Resolution.

 Mental Health

 Youth Spirituality

Youth as Agents for Peace and Justice, and

 First Aid Mentoring.

The present Director of SIYSIFLA is Nolan Salmon Parairua, is a past winner of the Queen’s Young Leaders Award and devotes all his time to helping causes in support of the youth and local communities.

Full details of the proposed programme have already been sent to the local media but it has not been possible for me to learn if any notice was given to support the youth initiative since both the Island Sun and Solomon Star newspapers have stopped uploading letters sent to the respective Editors on their websites allowing for external information.

 Yours sincerely

 Frank Short
