“The Controller of Papua New Guinea's Covid-19 response has tightened restrictions as the country faces 540 infections.

“David Manning has banned large gatherings, some business activities and requires masks worn on public transport.

“Mr Manning said a ban now applies to gatherings of more than 50 people.

"All passengers on domestic flights need to prove they are not infected, while provincial authorities can demand testing, and to quarantine travellers if they refuse," Mr Manning said.

“Night clubs are now closed for the duration of the pandemic but bars can operate, if alcohol is served with food, and hygiene rules followed.

“Sports events need the approval of the PNG Sports Foundation, which will act in consultation with the Department of Health.

“Schools, markets, churches and shops must enforce social distancing and provide hand wash facilities at entry and exit.

“Masks should be worn wherever possible but are compulsory for users and drivers of buses, taxis and aircraft.”
