NZ step in to assist in environmental disaster

Quoting the Island Sun newspaper – 28 February 2019

“New Zealand is working alongside the Government of Australia to assist the Solomon Islands Government as it manages the disastrous heavy fuel oil spill at Kangava Bay, West Rennell.

“It is understood New Zealand is concerned that the oil presents a major threat to the environment and marine life of Rennell Island, as well as the health and livelihoods of the people of Rennell Island and to any NZ visitors.

“Yesterday, a media release from the NZ High Commission’s Office stated that the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade updated its travel advice for Rennell to “Avoid non-essential travel to Rennell Island due to health and environmental risks associated with a heavy fuel oil spill in nearby Kangava Bay”.

“Australian Maritime Safety Authority estimates that up to 60 tonnes of heavy fuel oil has already leaked from the ship and more is likely to follow.”
