A Christmas wish for the Solomon Islands Serve others not ones self

25 December 2022

I have read that the public has donated over $118,000 to the Christian Care Centre through donation boxes placed in eight Bulk stores in Honiara.

I much appreciate this donation and, as Christian community, as the Solomon Islands is, I a mindful of our duty to serve others rather than ourselves.

Some of us may not be able to do great things, but we should always try to do small things in a great way.

This Christmas, let us all be mindful of the Lord’s example who gave up his status to serve others in the humblest of ways.

Serving is not a popular topic. It is contrary to the world’s idea of greatness and importance, which are defined in terms of power, possessions, and esteem.

Sadly, many miss the opportunity to serve because they lack sensitivity and spontaneity. Wonderful opportunities to serve never last long. They pass quickly, sometimes never to return again.

But helping and serving others also brings compensation on this side of eternity too. In Man’s Search for Meaning, Viktor Frankl says that the more “one forgets himself – by giving himself to a cause to serve or another person to love – the more human he is and the more fulfilled he becomes.”

His statement echoes the old Chinese proverb: “A bit of fragrance always clings to the hand that gives you roses.”

This Christmas and from here on, let us remind ourselves of the example our religious teaching set for us to follow.

Sincerely

Frank Short
