Call for free education for students with special needs

18 April 2022

The Malaita Province Youth Council (MPYC) has called on all school Administrations and Boards in the country to consider offering free education to all people with special needs in the country.

MPYC made this statement following a public call made to support Ms Talyn Laukeni (a person with special need) to continue with her study this year.

Members of the public have flooded the social media supporting Ms Talyn by calling on government and school administrations to consider and allow people with special needs to attend school freely without paying school fees.

Ms Talyn Laukeni has attended Adaua Secondary School in Malaita from form 1 to 6 and this year, she successfully passed the national exam and made it to Form Seven at Aligegeo Provincial Secondary in Malaita province.

“When she was at Adaua Secondary School, the school gave her the privilege to attend school for free as her parents couldn’t afford school fees. Unfortunately now, she has to pay for her Form Seven school fees, to be able to access the University South Pacific (USP) Foundation courses (through Aligegeo).” a report stated

Currently a go GoFundMe was created to help and support Ms Laukeni continue with her education, but the MPYC wishes all students like Talyn be given free education.

I support the call from the MPYC for free education for all SI’s children with special needs to be given free education. I hope many others will to.
