Covid 19 cases in Bellona and the deployment of limited RSIPF personnel to assist in the local enforcement of safety and Covid regulations

According to separate news stories published in the Island Sun newspaper Bellona Island has registered 22 new cases of Covid-19 and it is understood the total cases of Covid is 34.

The high transmission of the virus on Bellona is said to be worrying locals and health officials.

In the second related story, the RSIPF is preparing to deploy three of its members to Bellona to assist front liner personnel in enforcing Covid-19 safety regulations and restrictions.

The police deployment follows an urgent request by the Bellona Covis-19 Committee for police help.

It is claimed that when the request for police assistance was made, the Police Media’s Desmond Rave allegedly told the Island Sun newspaper. “The RSIP Executive has no time for media enquiries. They are very buy people dealing with other matters beside media inquires. They have many things on their table to deal with.”

If such a statement was allegedly made by Mr. Rave it was inappropriate in my view and a statement not in keeping with what is expected of the police in relation to duties, responsibilities and police-public relations.

It seems after the conversation with Mr. Rave the Island Sun contacted Sergeant Mick Pongi of the RSIPF who confirmed three police officers would be sent to Bellona to help in enforcing the local safety measures and Covid regulations.

It is understood the police deployment took place last Thursday.
