Entrepreneurship evidenced in 2022 at home and in PNG

31 December 2022

“Entrepreneurship plays a vital role in economic growth of a country through export. It increases the economic condition of the people of the country. Hence, this study examines the role of entrepreneurship in the export and economic growth of a country. From the survey and study, it is concluded that entrepreneurship plays a key contributor in export of a country. It promotes the economy of the country by export, increasing the per capita income of the people. It also improves the standard of living of the people and leads to balanced growth in country irrespective of regional inequalities.’ ( B Vasanthi)

What the above quote relates is true and I wish there are been more evidence of entrepreneurship witnessed in stories from the Solomon Islands this year, 2022, but one story that did catch my eye and is worthy of relating is this, and I quote the details.

Teiba Mamu related the account of a rice milling project in East Are’are in Malaita Province.

The project based at the Tawataha Rural Training Center has begun rice milling with a machine obtained by the GEF Small Grants Program for food security to enable local rice growers to benefit from milling their own rice crops.

This project I see as highly beneficial and one would hope that in 2023 the GEF Small Grants Program will be utilised to benefit many more local communities to enhance food security and, hopefully, contribute to exports of local products.

In neighboring Papua New Guinea, I was impressed when I read of the tremendous enterprise and entrepreneurship of June Magasu who has started her own successful business in manufacturing and selling her wide range of beauty products, including soaps, oils, and body deodorants under the brand name Tarai Natural Beauty Products.

June is clearly passionate about her business and product range.

Comment.

I would wish people in the SI with the same passion as June would take the initiative to start their own business, helped by small grants and a situation which I would greatly encourage the Solomon Islands Government to actively pursue.

Yours sincerely
