PNG OFFERS CONDOLENCES AND SUPPORT TO AUSTRALIA

PNG has offered condolences and support to Australia arising from the devastating bush fires raging in many parts of Australia

Two days ago and article in the Guardian said, and I quote:

“Two more bushfire deaths on Kangaroo Island, in remote South Australia, have brought to 23 the number of people killed in fires across Australia this fire season, with six people still missing in fire-affected regions across New South Wales and Victoria.

“ On Saturday, the Australian prime minister, Scott Morrison, announced his government would send Australia’s largest warship, HMAS Adelaide, to help evacuation efforts from towns on the Victorian coast cut-off by fires, compulsorily call up 3,000 army reservists to assist in fire recovery, and put $20m towards leasing four more water-bombing aircraft.

Meanwhile, it was reported by Radio New Zealand today, Monday, that Papua New Guinea has offered to send 1000 emergency personnel to assist Australia in dealing with its deadly bush fires.

“PNG Prime Minister James Marape released a statement sending his condolences to the people of Australia - especially the families of those lost to the devastating fires.

Mr Marape said Australia was the closest friend of PNG and was always the first to help in times of adversity.

He said he had been in constant communication with Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison, and if invited PNG would send 1000 combined soldiers and fire-fighters.
