Quoting Island Sun newspaper - July 2019
“The Government is building a second runway at Henderson International Airport as part of a major facelift for the nation’s first international gateway as well as upgrades of regional airports.
“The new runway will be built from the Lungga River end and will run the full length of the existing runway in a V-shape. The construction of the new runway will also see the relocation of Solomon Airlines domestic offices at Henderson Airport.
“Details of the new runway and the plans to upgrade regional airports are still being finalised.
“Communications and Civil Aviation Minister, Peter Shanel, confirmed the plan for the second runway, saying it is part of changes for Henderson International Airport as well as proposed upgrades of regional airports in the country.
“Mr Shanel said work on the new runway could start as soon as the winner of public tender for the resurfacing of Henderson International Airport’s existing runway is announced. Resurfacing work, expected to start later this year, is likely to be funded by the World Bank.”
