“PRIME Minister Manasseh Sogavare is due to leave for China early next week following a formal invitation by the Chinese Government.

“Details of the visit are sketchy, but Island Sun understands Prime Minister Sogavare and his delegation will leave on Monday 7th October for Beijing where he will sign a raft of development cooperation agreement with China.

“The visit will be Mr Sogavare’s first since the two countries established diplomatic relations on Monday 16 September this year. The two countries have since formalised the new relationship with the signing in Beijing of a Joint Communique a week later on 21 September 2019.

“It is not clear how many will be on the delegation. Among the documents to be signed is a Framework Agreement on economic cooperation, which would cover a number of sectors, including infrastructure development, education and other areas.

“Meanwhile the Gold Ridge Mine which has been dormant for many years is due to start soon. Insiders said China Railway has been contracted by GRML to reopen the mine with ground breaking being scheduled for October 26, 2019.”
