STORM DAMAGE IN MALAITA

WIDESPREAD DAMAGE IN MALAITA PROVINCE

Quoting the Solomon Star newspaper – 4 January 2019

“MORE than 200 homes and properties in Malaita were reportedly damage when strong wind and heavy rain pounded the province on New Year’s night.

“Red Cross branch officer in Auki Rex Leofasia said they’ve received more than 200 reports of damages to homes.

“Mr Leofasia said Red Cross has activated its Emergency Operation Centre on January 1 shortly after the province experienced heavy rain and strong winds.

“He said assessment teams have already been deployed to affected areas.

“We’ve received reports from Aoke/Langalanga, central Kwara’ae, west Kwara’ae, east Malaita and from Lau Mbaelelea,” the Red Cross officer stated.

“He said other international organisations based in Auki such as World Vision and Safe the Children are supporting the assessment teams with transportation.

“At the moment assessment teams are currently in operation to assess areas that are badly affected by flooding and strong wind.”

“Meanwhile, a villager at Bubuitolo community in west Kwara’ae, Henry Maesulia reported that more than 10 houses were damage by the strong wind.

“Mr Maesulia said the strong wind started hitting their community just after 12am on New Year’s Eve.

“Some of the damaged homes were caused by fallen trees.”

“Other reports reaching Solomon Star say two houses where badly damage at Koa village in ward 3, west Kwara’ae.

“Of all the damages, no casualties were reported.”
