Two local news stories today worth highlighting

I glanced through the pages of the Solomon Star newspaper this morning and picked out two stories I thought worth mentioning

The first stories relates to the SI Red Cross and the work the Society has been doing to raise COVID awareness in the communities.

The second story refers to the Fotana Tribal Land Trust Board and a possible ‘East Fataleka Industrial Development Plan in the future.

I found both stories interesting from the point of appreciation of a job well done by the Red Cross and the prospects of community progress and better economic prospects in East Fataleka in Malaita.

Here are the stories, and I quote from the newspaper.

Leaders hail Red Cross for COVID awareness

Community leaders in Malaita Province have acknowledged Red Cross for their fight against the Covid 19 by continuing to deliver COVID awareness to the communities.

It was reported that despite the high risk of COVID 19 community transmission in the province, a hard working volunteer team from Red Cross in Malaita has managed to reach the most communities with their awareness programs.

A report said that this week the team visited Dukwasi village in the Central Kwara’ae and conducted awareness to the community.

“Red Cross volunteers in Malaita Branch keep on rolling out awareness around key COVID-19 safety measures as well as vaccination.

“Yesterday, they were able to conduct awareness in Dukwasi village, sharing information to women, children, elderly as well as youths and men who attend the program,” it stated.

A community leader Emanuel Laungiau joins other leaders to acknowledge the Red Cross for their effort and responsibility to reach down to the community with information regard to COVID 19.

He said most people in rural area are still lacks with information from health authorities.

EAST FATALEKA KEEN TO OPEN UP LAND FOR DEVELOPMENT

The Office of the Prime minister & Cabinet this week hosted to a presentation by the Fotana Tribal Land Trust board on the “East Fataleka Industrial Development Plan” a 50 year Action Plan aimed at the creation of a peaceful, harmonious and progressive community to improve the socio and economic livelihood of the people of East Fataleka, Malaita Province.

Representing the Policy Implementation Monitoring & Evaluation Unit (PIMEU) of the OPMC, Dr. Samson Viulu thanked the Malaitan Community Leaders of the Fotana Land Trust board for initiating the meeting and sharing their vision in informing PIMEU of their intention to allow their Land in East Fataleka collectively consisting of 6000 hectares of land, 7 registered & 8 Customary plots respectively identified for development purposes.

Mr. Dave Tafoa a trustee of the FTLTB in his presentation said the Fotana Land itself which is registered Perpetual Land was intended and demarcated to host an International AirPort, a Tuna Processing Plant, a Resort and Agriculture and Aqua Farming.

Also in attendance during the presentation were reps from the Ongo and Ro’ole tribes who also spoke in support of the presentation by Mr. Tafoa.

Dr.Viulu of the OPMC responded after the presentation by FTLTB that this was a beginning of many steps forward and PIMEU would look into their Proposal and make further consultation in finding a way forward to realizing the collective plan for the betterment of East Fataleka, Malaita Province and the Country.
